Two calming chews can list chamomile, L-theanine and melatonin in the same order and deliver completely different amounts of each. The ingredient list tells you what is in the pack. It does not tell you how much. That number is the one worth looking for, and it is the one most often left off.
Look for amounts, not just names
A label that says "calming blend" and then lists six plants has told you nothing. A label that says L-theanine 100 mg per chew has told you something you can compare, look up and discuss with a vet. If the amount is missing, treat the ingredient as decorative until proven otherwise.
Proprietary blends hide the split
A blend listed as 500 mg across five ingredients could be 460 mg of one cheap filler and 10 mg each of the rest. The total is real and the split is hidden, which is the point. Products that break the blend down into per ingredient amounts are telling you something the others are choosing not to.
Dosing is by body weight, and it matters
A chew suitable for a forty kilo dog is not one chew for a terrier. Good packs give a table: weight band, number of chews, maximum per day. Packs that say "one to three chews as needed" are leaving the hardest part to you.
Ingredients with published work behind them
Casein, tryptophan, melatonin and L-theanine have been studied in dogs specifically, which puts them ahead of ingredients borrowed wholesale from the human wellness aisle. Presence on a label is not evidence of effect at that amount, but an ingredient with research behind it and a stated dose is a better starting point than one with neither.
Check before you buy, not after
The label is usually photographed on the product page. Read it there. If the amounts are not shown anywhere before checkout, that is itself the answer.
